Wink: A Wearable Action Camera for Everyday Communication

Redesigning Video Sharing for Routine Communication

With the steady development of social media and new forms of communication, sharing videos and photos has become an integral part of our daily lives. Inspired by this shift, designer Taeuk Ham created 'Wink,' a wearable action camera that aims to make video sharing more immediate and natural as a routine form of communication.

'Wink' is designed to revolutionize life-logging and video sharing by seamlessly integrating into our daily routines. The goal is to transform video filming into an act of natural daily record and sharing, rather than something that disrupts our daily lives. The unique properties of 'Wink' make it stand out from other action cameras on the market.

One of the key challenges in designing a wearable action camera is maintaining a slim and portable form factor without compromising performance. 'Wink' overcomes this challenge by incorporating a periscope camera module, commonly used in mobile phones, to reduce the thickness of the camera while maintaining image resolution. This innovative use of technology maximizes portability without sacrificing quality.

The specifications of 'Wink' include a 44mm x 25mm aluminum and ceramic case, Gorilla Glass, a leather strap, and an 8MP telephoto lens. These features ensure durability, style, and high-quality image capture.

Interaction with 'Wink' is intuitive and effortless. The camera can be attached to both the wrist and the chest. When attached to the chest, it automatically records the user's daily life without any manual operation. In the event of an incident that needs to be captured, the user can press the extruded side button, and the camera saves the past 15 seconds of recordings. Additionally, the camera module can be detached and attached to the wristband, serving as a discreet communication device in situations where cameras are not allowed.

The 'Wink' project was initiated in March 2020 in Seoul, Republic of Korea, and completed in June 2020. It was exhibited online in the K-Design Exhibition 2021, showcasing its innovative design and functionality.

'Wink' has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Video and Broadcasting Equipment Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. 'Wink' stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

With 'Wink,' Taeuk Ham has reimagined video sharing as a seamless and natural form of communication. This wearable action camera combines style, functionality, and portability, making it an essential device for those who value capturing and sharing life's moments.
